Biological control of mealy bugs in greenhouses

Currently, mealy bugs are often controlled with natural enemies in organic gardens or offices, swimming pools, zoos and botanical gardens under glass. The results of biological control for these applications is generally good, but these are not applied in commercial greenhouses. Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture in the Netherlands studied the possibilities of the release of natural enemies.

In commercial production greenhouses growers have some practical experience with curative releases of natural enemies. The beetle Cryptolaemus is often not retrieved, and releases of wasps when mealy bugs are observed are often too late. Then still insecticide intervention is needed. In this project we investigated whether the continuous use of natural enemies can prevent the expansion of mealy bugs towards not infested plants and if they can control small hot-spots. With the commercially available parasitic wasps and ladybugs we were able to eliminate small hot-spots and reduce infestations of mealy bugs, but it was not possible to fully exterminate the pest. Controlling mealy bugs was not possible without corrective spraying with chemical pesticides because a zero tolerance policy is applied in potted plants. Flonicamid proved to be an effective and selective compound to control outbreaks of mealy bugs with little impact on biological control agents. This product is unfortunately not registered against mealy bugs in greenhouses in The Netherlands.

Side effects of Spanish crisis: back to agriculture

The city of El Ejido has given approval for installation of greenhouses in areas previously authorized for urban developments. After the bursting of the bubble of the construction industry such places have remained as waste land since several years. Under the new conditions, the category of developable land remains unchanged. The greenhouses to be installed should be, however, easily removable, from the type locally known as “parral”.

This reverses the trend established in the years of the housing bubble, in which agricultural areas inexorably lost their ground against the voracity construction. At that moment, the great value of land for construction imposed to vegetable growing unassumable opportunity costs and pressure for the conversion of agricultural land into building land, especially in coastal areas of touristic expectation, was terribly strong.

With the housing bubble burst and construction activity reduced to a minimum, the income generating capacity of these areas is reduced to zero. Whereupon the resolution of the municipality of El Ejido – at the heart of Spanish Almeria, the largest area under greenhouse vegetable crop in the world - returns to farming areas that would otherwise be unable to generate any income.

According to figures of the Dutch horticulture product board PT, this year until July, the Dutch cucumber export is considerably lower than in 2010. The lower export this year is the result of lower production in spring, says Marcel van Koppen, coordinator of cucumbers at Rijk Zwaan.

Van Koppen compares the export figures of cucumbers this year with 2010, because 2011 was not a normal year, due to the Ehec crisis. This year, to July, 209,000 ton of cucumbers are exported. In 2010 this was 239,000 ton. Last year, in the year of the Ehec crisis, the Dutch cucumber export from January to July reached only 202,000 ton. In the month of October, November and December in 2011, exports were at a higher level than in the same months in 2010. Therefore it ca b concluded that there were no more effects of the Ehec crisis.

Especially the export of cucumbers to Germany suffered from the Ehec crisis. Throughout 2010 the cucumber export to Germany was 273,000 ton, while in the Ehec-year 2011, this was 235.000 ton. In the summer of 2011, the consumption of cucumbers was clearly less.

In 2011 Spain has not suffered from the Ehec crisis, because the growers in this country export cucumbers in the winter months to Germany. Imports from Spain in 2010 was 180,170 ton and in 2011 it grew slightly to 180,933 ton.

In an early cucumber crop at Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture in Bleiswijk (the Netherlands), the effect of diffuse glass with a haze of 71% to production, quality and energy consumption was studied in cucumber production. The effects of diffuse glass were compared with those in a greenhouse covered with standard glass and the same light transmission.

The trial lasted from the end of December to the end of April. The first stem fruits under diffuse glass flowered earlier and the growth duration was half a day shorter on average. From the first harvest onwards, production was higher under diffuse glass. In the end, a production increase of 6% was realized, 4% more fruits and 2% heavier fruits. The fruit quality under diffuse glass was not affected.

The measured light transmission in the diffuse glass greenhouse was on average 2.5% higher than in the reference. In the diffuse greenhouse 30 to over 350% more condensation was measured. The energy consumption increased by 5% under diffuse glass, but because of the higher production, the energy efficiency was the same as that of the reference

Organizers of the Moscow exhibitions “Flowers IPM” and “Expo Flora Russia” came to an agreement  about the two horticulture trade fairs to be held at the same dates and in one building as of 2013, with the purpose of covering the complete Russian floriculture, gardening & landscaping industry in one event.

All Russian Exhibition Centre (“Flowers IPM”) and HPP Exhibitions (Expo Flora Russia) will for this reason as of this year organize their fairs in the All-Russia Exhibition Centre in Moscow. Exhibition dates are set from Wednesday the 28th of August to Saturday the 31st of August.

The traditional Moscow based “Flowers” expo is already succesfully taking place in the All Russian Exhibition Centre for 20 years (since 1994) and is leading in the field of gardening and landscaping. By teaming up with Expo Flora Russia of HPP Exhibitions the floriculture part of the event will get a strong boost.

не о теплицах в понимании слова распространённого на этом форуме.

Да даже, если со всеми туннелями... В Латвии 7 ТК иной год производят огурца БОЛЬШЕ, чем вся страна по статистике :))))) Самое веселое то, что статистика получает данные от всех этих хозяйств, но не суммирует их, а как-то по своей методике перерабатывает. А я с этой дамой (которая овощи считает) живу в одном доме :))))), правда, давно не встречались...

Tomato grower Eurofresh Farms, based in Willcox in the US state of Arizona, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in four years, with the intention of selling its assets to it's rival NatureSweet.

NatureSweet Limited, the leading grower of premium fresh tomatoes in North America announced the company intends to purchase substantially all of the assets of EuroFresh Farms, based in Willcox and Snowflake, Arizona. NatureSweet and EuroFresh Farms are two of the leading producers of high-quality tomatoes in North America. EuroFresh Farms is also a leading US grower of greenhouse cucumbers.

On January 27, EuroFresh filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Tucson; the acquisition will then take place through a 363 sale. A 363 sale allows a company filing for bankruptcy to immediately market its assets to bidders, with the approval of the United States Bankruptcy Court.

Bringing EuroFresh products into the NatureSweet family provides us with new product offerings and US growing facilities that we are confident will provide significant value to our customers," said Bryant Ambelang, chief executive officer and president of NatureSweet. “This acquisition is a great opportunity to continue our growth while providing customers with the premium branded tomatoes they have come to expect from NatureSweet. For the company, our customers and our associates, this is the right thing to do at the right time."

Johan van den Berg, chief executive officer of EuroFresh Farms, added, "We are pleased to have received this offer from a financially strong organization that will continue to invest in the business of growing and selling greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers."

The court filings are not expected to affect EuroFresh Farms' ability to operate its business and deliver on current or future customer orders.

Research into LED en diffuse light in tomatoes

Dutch research by Wageningen University and GreenQ into the combination of LED light and diffuse glass has led to new insights. However, the techniques are not yet ready to put into practise. The research is part of the New Generation Cultivation, which has the goal to safe fuel consumption in greenhouses an to optimise the production.

In the research, the hours of lighting are adjusted to the crop requirements, taking into account the amount of sunlight in the past three days and the expected sun light in the three days to come. The first results of the trial shows that balance in the tomato plants (between fruits and leaves), is slightly better under LED light in combination with diffuse glass than under the traditional SON-T lighting. Halfway the trial, plants under diffuse light has produced 1 kilo more tomatoes than plants which are placed under traditional glass.

Part of the research is additional lighting with far red light (730 nm). According to Stefan Persoon of Inno-Agrow, this additional lighting stimulates the growth in the length. As a result the crop is more open, which allows more light in the lowest leaves. So far there were no effects on the setting of fruits.

не Хортибиз, но интересно подсмотреть, как голландцы показывают новый тепличный комплекс в Белгороде. Кстати, они тут пишут интересную вещь - в этом комплексе установлена автоматическая регистрация дорожек (проходов между растениями). То есть, не тетенька с блокнотиком ходит и за всеми каждый чих записывает, а каждый работник свой чип в "калькулятор" вставляет и все данные идут на комп менеджера - кто какую дорожку обработал или урожай убирал. Прива такие игрушки начала выпускать еще лет 10 назад и сами голландцы их широко применяют.

Думаю, что правильнее было бы сказать, что такая система там установлена и скоро заработает.

Турецкая экспансия

urkey: Greenhouse expansion to boost agricultural investment

A drive to restructure Turkey’s agricultural sector that includes ambitious plans to expand fruit and vegetable production is set to open the door for foreign investors looking to meet growing demand back home. Plans to drill new geothermal wells this year to help boost greenhouse production should further increase exports. However, the expansion is also prompting concerns that the introduction of new technology could lead to job losses.

Buoyed by favourable geographic conditions and abundant rainfall, Turkey’s agricultural sector contributed $62bn to the economy in 2012, after growing steadily over the past three years on the back of significant government investment in major irrigation and infrastructure projects.

The South-eastern Anatolian Project (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi, GAP), a regional sustainable development scheme, has played a major role in strengthening Turkey’s agricultural industry by providing infrastructure, planning and education for farmers.

Since it was first set up in 1987, GAP has expanded into a TL42bn ($23.7bn) initiative that offers training to farmers in contemporary irrigation and cultivation techniques, while providing them with modern tools and equipment. The scheme has helped push up agricultural exports from $1.7bn in 2002 to $5bn in 2010, excluding processed food, according to Invest in Turkey.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the agriculture sector has also risen significantly over the years, reaching $2.1bn in the first 10 months of 2012, up from $14m in 2002, according to the agriculture minister, Mehdi Eker.

The south-eastern city of Şanlıurfa has benefited significantly from GAP by using the scheme’s land consolidation projects and irrigation systems to transform itself into a hub for greenhouse fruit and vegetable production. With demand for produce in Europe rising, many EU states are now eyeing the region’s investment potential.

Currently, a total of 54.216 ha have been allocated to greenhouse production in Turkey, which ranks fourth for fresh vegetable cultivation in the world. The country sits 11th on the global list for fruit production.

Turkey took steps to boost its greenhouse production in 2000 by drilling 54 geothermal wells in the south-east. Today, geothermal greenhouses in Şanlıurfa hold a 24.5mw capacity over an area of 106,000 sq metres. However, with Europe constantly looking to increase its imports of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and herbs produced by hydroponics, demand is outstripping supply.

Keen to boost capacity, Turkey plans to drill new geothermal wells in Şanlıurfa this year which should provide investment opportunities for up to 1500 new greenhouses, according to Müslüm Yanmaz, president of the GAP Greenhouse Association. “In the past two years, investors from Holland, Dubai and Kuwait have put in offers to invest in greenhouse fruit and vegetable production, but we haven’t had the geothermal capacity to be able to embark on such ventures,” he said.

While the initiative will help the industry’s development, concerns have been raised that mechanisation and techniques aimed at modernising agriculture could result in job losses. Some 6.2m people work in Turkish agricultural fields, which are spread over 24m hectares of land, according to the ministry of agriculture.

Demir Sarman, CEO of Anadolu ETAP, a food processing and fruit cultivation company, told OBG that while innovation could reduce the need for manual labour, this does not necessarily mean that workers would be left jobless.

“The introduction of new technologies in the agricultural business has indeed led to a certain amount of labour dislocation,” Sarman said. “Yet, while farms in Turkey are using fewer employees, food and beverage manufacturing plants have steadily increased their personnel. Increased productivity in agribusiness through use of technology and educated manpower has also helped Turkish producers lower their costs, thus strengthening Turkey’s competitiveness in international markets.”

To date, Turkey’s competitive workforce has proved popular with investors, who find it well suited to labour-intensive food production. Yanmaz added that he expected the increase of greenhouses in 2013 to help provide employment for farmers displaced through modernisation of the sector. The ministry has also said it expects its own workforce to expand by 2500 in 2013.

Turkey’s agriculture ministry will be spearheading plans to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the sector as part of a broader initiative to fight global food inflation. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), supported by additional funds from the US, has also launched a €400m ($533m) facility to increase lending for smaller-sized farms, while Turkey’s DenizBank signed a €40m ($53.3m) credit line to offer loans to farmers.

The government has set the agriculture sector a two-fold target for the next decade of raising its GDP contribution to $150bn and increasing exports to $40bn. If achieved, the plan, which forms part of a broader set of objectives to be met by 2023 when the country celebrates 100 years as a republic, will set Turkey on track to reach an additional long-term goal of becoming one of the world’s top five countries for agricultural production.

High humidity in greenhouses can cause crop diseases like botrytis. Research by Peter van Weel of Wageningen University in the Netherlands shows that this problem can be solved by using fans which move air in vertical direction and by a good strategy to open and close the screens.



In the past years, Van Weel did a lot or research into micro climate in Dutch greenhouses in relation to air movements. According to him, physical process can help to reduce condensation at the surface of crops which also reduces problems with fungal diseases. Van Weel has three rules to reduce the humidity:



1. Reduce the temperature differences as much as possible because condensation takes place at the coldest spots of the greenhouse.



2. Air movement is a good way to get moisture out of a crop and this does not need a lot of energy.



3. Disperse the excessive moisture out of the greenhouse by getting in outside air. Because of the overpressure, there will be no draught.



Screens

A good use of screens can also contribute to a better climate, says Van Weel. Temperature is often the reason to open or close screens. But this is not the best strategy because under a clear sky the head of plants can lose a lot a heat though radiation. As a result the top of the plant will become moisture. This can a avoided through screening in time. A pyrgeometer, that measures the atmospheric infra-red radiation, can be a good help.



Growers often  create gaps in screens to discharge the moist. But this leads to cold spots in the crop. A good measure to avoid big differences in temperature above the screens, is to install vertical partitions in the top of the greenhouse. This avoids differences in temperature in the greenhouse when a growers creates gaps in the screen to discharge moist. However the best way to discharge moist air is to keep the screen closed and to ventilate with outside air though pipes or with fans in the screen. 



Often there is a warm ‘blanket’ right under the screen where moisture masses together. This can be avoided by installing vertical fans.

Любопытный способ борьбы с мучнистой росой на розах - регулярное облучение ультрафиолетом. Причем интересно, со временем снизилась инфицированность даже на тех частях растения, куда ультрафиолет не попадает. Видимо, за счет того, что снизилось общее количество спор в теплице. Пишут, что затраты на защиту растений от мучнистой росы снизились с 85 до 10 центов/м2. Интересно, насколько возросли затраты на электроэнергию? :)

Lex+ is a rose breeding company with customers and offices all over the world. Several of the internationally renowned rose varieties such as Avalanche+, were developed by Lex+  and can be seen in their demonstration greenhouses near Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. This crop has to be in top condition everyday of the week, because growers from anywhere in the world can show up at anytime, and they need to be impressed.



For many years, crop protection was achieved using the conventional chemical technologies. The greenhouse manager, Mr. Theo Baars explains: “Every time we sprayed against mildew or Botrytis, neither the crop nor the beneficial insects were exactly jumping for joy. So, we were actively looking for a non-chemical way to protect our crop without bothering the crop and our beneficial insects.” 

 

There was an additional challenge when using chemical fungicides in this demonstration greenhouse. Sales Coordinator Ms. Carolijn Stokman explains: “The purpose of this greenhouse is to welcome rose growers from around the world. But pesticide legislation here in Holland is quite restrictive: When we spray we cannot permit visitors into our showroom, so to speak. This was an extra reason why we wanted to steer away from chemical crop protection as much as we reasonably speaking could.”



Stokman continues: In 2008, someone from a company that makes UV light installations for crop protection came by. They claimed their technology could control mildew and Botrytis with a special form of light, so that we could reduce our need for fungicides. Even though we had our doubts we agreed at that time to do a small trial, using an inexpensive hand operated cart.

 

Theo Baars explains the effects on the crop and on the disease: After a few weeks we noticed that newly developed foliage remained clean, more or less free of mildew. But only the section that was reached by the light. Initially, we kept on observing new mildew on the underside of the leaves, where our lamps could not reach. That was disappointing, because in effect it meant we had to keep on spraying with fungicides.



However, a few weeks later we observed that the underside of the leaves remained clean as well. The level of innoculum in the greenhouse had dropped. And the crop had become stronger, better able to defend itself against diseases. This was a True Revelation for us: We were able to keep top and bottom of the new leaves clean, so we could curtail our chemical crop protection program substantially:



 



1.    The crop looked stronger and healthier.

2.    The natural wax layer on the foliage remained intact. The leaves were shiny, once again.

3.    We could discontinue the use of our sulfur burners.

4.    The expenditures for beneficial insects as part of our IP program dropped, because we no longer “fought against the good guys” with chemicals and with sulfur

5.    Our expenditures on fungicides for mildew control dropped from 85 cents to 10 cents per square meter



 





In 2009, when the effects of this technology became apparent to Lex+, they decided to abandon their handcarts, and they invested in an automated system that applied the lamps. In their case that was a SprayRobot from Berg Hortimotive, but a SprayRobot from Wanjet is also suitable for this technology. It rides fully automated through the greenhouse with a speed of 30 meters per minute.



Thanks to the automated control, the mildew has now virtually disappeared, from the crop, and also from the air in the greenhouse. Theo Baars concludes: “By now, the disease pressure is so low that several weeks go by without any need to interfere. If and when a little bit of mildew comes into our greenhouse and onto the crop, I run the machine for a few days, until the crop is vital and clean, once again.” 



In 2011 en 2012 several of the other rose farms in Aalsmeer have followed the example set by Lex+. Carolijn Stokman, with a smile: “Yes, our neighbours follow our lead. And thus far they have saved 50%. Perhaps, one day, they will be as good as our own Theo Baars and reduce chemical crop protection altogether, just like we have managed.”

In high tech floriculture, vertical venting is already quite common, but in vegetable horticulture the technique is still relatively unknown. "By blowing the air back into the crops prevents getting a dead climate," says Henk de Groot of Nivola. Also, with the heat back into the crop you need lower minimum tube temperatures. "Energy savings are about 10 to 15%," he estimates.

"The air is blown sideways,” says Henk de Groot, pointing to the Nivolator. "This way a larger surface area is reached." The Nivolator is a vertical fan, blowing hot, dry air into the crops. Through the top and bottom of the unit, the air reaches the fan. Making full use of the technology, growers can realise a homogeneous greenhouse climate, both in terms of CO2 and in temperature. In addition, the airflow through the crops dries them quickly, preventing the formation of fungi like botrytis.





With smoke the airflow is made visible.



Normally the minimum pipe is used for dealing with humidity between plants, but with the Nivolator this is no longer necessary. The flow of dry air whisks moisture away. "You prevent a dead climate," explains De Groot. All in all, the Nivolator helps growers reach energy savings of about 10 to 15%, says De Groot. “Perhaps even more, but we’re not sure.”

Cleaning the inside of your greenhouse is a necessary task, but very labour-intensive. For exactly this reason, the job is mainly outsourced to agricultural contractors that have the right equipment to get this job done in a short time, with a good result. Van der Waay has delivered several AquaJets over the past few years and gained necessary experience in the area.





 





Market Demand



This task is very hard and expensive to outsource for growers, gardeners and florists in the Netherlands, and are mainly left on their own devices to get this job done. Van der Waay is therefore often asked if they have an affordable solution for it.

That is why Van der Waay designed an entirely new AquaJet with the following most important goals: it had to be affordable, reliable and sound, easy to use, had to comprise of simple technique and had to be all-round irrespective of the type of cultivation and tube rail system.





 



Two in One



With former versions you always needed one spray cart and one flush cart, but this is no longer the case with the new AquaJet. It can be used to spray cleansing agents against the roof and it can be used to hose down the greenhouse roof under high pressure and with a lot of water without having to rebuild the cart. Reversing the tap is sufficient to get it done. By means of this combined machine, the investment is also an interesting option for smaller companies.



 





Plug and Play



Another major advantage of the AquaJet is that you do not need a separate high-pressure pump any longer. It is integrated in the tube rail cart. No more dragging large pump units and hose reels. Just connect a hose to a water tap, open the tap, start the engine and drive. It cannot get any simpler.

Одно голландское хозяйство захотело перейти на светокультуру, да теплицы были низковаты для ламп. Они подняли 6 га на 1,65 м до общей высоты стены 6 м. Работали 20 человек 4 недели.

Наткнулась на Hortidaily на этот ролик





Ученые в Вагенингене создали сканер для спор. Определяет за 30 минут количественный и видовой состав спор в 50 л воздуха теплицы. Идея в том, что воздух засасывается в этот ящик и проходит через фильтрующую мембрану, на которой споры и оседают. После прокачки 50 л воздуха, вентилятор автоматически отключается. Зватем кассету с фильтром помещают в другой ящик, и пока пьется кофе на смартфоне или в распечатанном виде выдается ответ.



Сколько это чудо стоит, там не говорится.

Спасибо, Марите. Дело это хорошее, только смысла в нем пока немного. Некоторые грибы не образуют спор, например, противная ризоктония. Некоторые размножаются зооспорами через воду и физически не попадаютна такой фильтр. Я уж не говорю о новых и карантинных видах, которые просто могут быть не включены в анализируемый пул спор.

Да, Вы правы, но во-первых, я этим добром не торгую, а делюсь информацией :), а во-вторых, в тех же цветочных хозяйствах, где главные проблемы - серая гниль и мучнистая роса, таким образом можно вовремя определить время проведения профилактических обработок, не дожидаясь первых признаков. В рассадных теплицах это может быть интересно. В грибоводстве.



Такой метод позволяет оценить эффективность/потенциальный риск применения вентиляторов, а их применяют все больше.



Ведь не ставится задача так уж сразу определить все летающие в воздухе споры, вполне достаточно определить наиболее актуальные для той или иной культуры.
