Code Red smog hampers greenhouse production
Continuous smog in Northern China is having an impact on the growth of greenhouse vegetables. Due to lack of sunshine, the temperature in greenhouses is around 20 degrees lower than it would be on clear days. The suppressed temperatures increase the risk of grey mould. Grey mould, or botrytis cinerea, has been found on almost all greenhouse cucumbers. It is estimated that current cucumber production is down by 10% to 30% due to botrytis cinerea. For the first time in history the Chinese government has given out the highest smog alarm, Code Red. Factories have been shut down. The smog is also hampering transport of vegetables to local markets as a number of vehicles are not allowed on the roads.
